Used Car Buyer’s Checklist

Used Car Buyer’s Checklist

A practical, 30-point checklist to inspect a used car—exterior, engine, papers, road test—so you never miss a red flag.

Exterior

  • Panel gaps consistent; look for overspray/rust.

  • Tyre tread even; all four match; check spare.

  • Headlamps/taillamps clear; all lights work.

Engine bay

  • Fluids at correct levels; no milky oil (coolant mix).

  • Belts/hoses crack-free; no burnt smells.

  • Cold start: idles smoothly, no smoke, no knocks.

Cabin & electronics

  • AC cools fast; blower is silent.

  • Power windows, central lock, infotainment, reverse cam—all OK.

  • Odometer & warning lights behave normally on ignition.

Road test

  • Straight-line stability; no vibrations at 80–100 km/h.

  • Brakes bite progressively; no pull to one side.

  • Suspension is quiet over bumps; steering returns to centre.

Papers

  • RC, valid insurance, PUC.

  • Service history, NOC (if hypothecated), invoices for major work.

  • Match VIN/engine numbers on the car and documents.
